President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, commissioned a state-of-the-art Nuclear Medicine Facility, at the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre in Accra on Wednesday, 13th May 2026.

The newly commissioned Facility — the first of its kind in West Africa and the 80th in the world — consists of a PET-CT Scanner and a Cyclotron.

Theme for the day – “Advancing Precision in Cancer Treatment,” brought in distinguished government officials, healthcare leaders, and members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

Welcome Address

Chief Executive Officer of Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, Dr. Clement Egyin Edusa, described the occasion as “a historic day for the healthcare future of Ghana and indeed the West African sub-region.”

Dr. Edusa in his address noted that early diagnosis improves treatment outcomes, reduces suffering, lowers healthcare costs, and eliminates patients to travel abroad for care.

Also commissioned was the Elekta Infinity Version Linear Accelerator, designed to provide radiotherapy of patients requiring targeted cancer treatment.

“This Centre is positioned to improve patient outcomes through early detection and precision diagnosis, provide jobs, train and retain health professionals, and ultimately contribute significantly to medical tourism in Ghana.”

President Mahama: A Major Milestone Toward Medical Sovereignty

H.E President Mahama In his keynote address, described the facility a milestone in Ghana’s journey toward world-class healthcare delivery and medical sovereignty.

He emphasized that the advanced diagnostic center will significantly strengthen Ghana’s capacity for early cancer detection, faster diagnosis, and improved treatment outcomes, reducing dependence on foreign medical travel.

“This facility positions Ghana not only to serve its citizens better but also to become a future medical hub for the West African sub-region.”

The President commended the visionary leadership of GNAT and the management of Sweden Ghana Medical Centre for their commitment to advancing healthcare infrastructure and ensuring quality medical care is accessible within Ghana.

President Mahama stressed that quality healthcare, teacher welfare, and educational reform remain inseparable pillars of Ghana’s long-term development agenda.

With this historic commissioning, Ghana takes a decisive step forward in redefining cancer care — advancing precision, restoring hope, and positioning itself firmly on the global map of healthcare excellence.
