SGMC Press Release

Sweden Ghana Medical Center Limited (SGMC) was incorporated on 1st November, 2007 as a limited liability company with the objective to establish and run a comprehensive cancer care facility in Accra. SGMC is a joint Ghanaian-Swedish venture with Elekta and Swedfund(GMI- Global Medical Investment) as part owners.

The first of the planned 3 phases dedicated to a high level oncology facility has been completed and the centre was officially inaugurated in June 2012. This involves radiotherapy using a Linear accelerator, medical oncology with an outpatient chemotherapy suite and diagnostic services (0.35 tesla MRI & 16 slice CT). We also offer support services such as Nutrition, General Practise, and Consultations & Support Groups.

Our objective is to deliver state of the art cancer treatment to residents of the West African sub-region, in combination with high efficiency and competitive pricing. We aim at developing a centre of excellence for various cancer care modalities. Quality of care is guaranteed with availability of experienced Ghanaian and international medical staff from well-endowed international institutions.

SGMC has come in time to help solve the regions need for private oncology services. In order to support an infrastructure like a cancer center, you need 24 hours power supply, an enabling environment, the atomic energy permission and other support structures because cancer treatment requires lot of efforts and logistics.

Statistics show that, most cancer patients go to India, Egypt and Turkey. A minimum of 500 to 1000 patients leave for India every month and that translates to about $2m every month, just to India.

SGMC is fully equipped with high caliber of human resources sourced from around the world, modern equipment which makes it a state-of-the-art centre. We are situated on the majestic hill overlooking the new Lakeside Community and offer access to accommodations for patients and family. We also provide top level meals and beverages for day patients in our café.
